Where the Wild Things Are:
Parenting in an Ever-changing World

Have you ever considered that some of the best parenting resources might already be on your children’s bookshelf?

Through the sharing of classic and modern children’s books, children’s literature, and Holy Scripture, Roger Hutchison and his team at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas led a very popular parenting class that explored and discussed themes such as grief, diversity, mindfulness, mental health, and much more using children’s picture books.

Roger Hutchison will highlight a selection of these books and talk about ways children’s books can be used as resources for parenting. This is open to all – dual parents, single parents, stepparents, godparents, prospective parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, grandparents, educators, librarians… come one, come all!

What is Come In, Come In! ?
Picture
Come in, Come in! is a children’s picture book that captures a young child and their dream of a world in which everyone is welcome just as they are. In this world, absolutely anything is possible, and you will meet a cast of characters you are certain never to forget—elephant clouds, yogi giraffes, giggling moons, dancing tricycles, pirouetting porcupines, hiccuping hyenas, starfish wishes and more!

Written by #1 bestselling children’s book author Roger Hutchison, and illustrated by award-winning illustrator, Nicky Mills, Come in, Come in! is certain to please readers & dreamers both young and old with its uniquely compelling universe and profound words meant to showcase the possibility of a world in which we all accept each other for exactly who we are.

What is Faces: A Love Story ?
Picture

Faces: A Love Story is a picture book for people of all ages featuring a simple text and full-color face illustrations of those we might see in our neighborhood, in the office or school, in the grocery store, on the playground, or on the street. Faces reflecting the image of God. Faces that remind us of our diversity and the stories we tell through colors, shapes, scars, ages, and expressions, now more than ever. And when life returns to normal, faces we cherish more than ever did before.

Roger Hutchison is the #1 Bestselling author and illustrator of many books including, Faces: A Love Story, The Painting Table, My Favorite Color is Blue. Sometimes., and Come in, Come in!.

Following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, Roger had the privilege of painting with children who witnessed this tragic event. The experience profoundly affected him and convinced him to serve those who grieve with his writing and art.

Roger received the Governor’s Order of the Silver Crescent Award in 2014. The Order of the Silver Crescent is South Carolina’s highest civilian honor for exemplary performance, contribution and achievement within the community.

There is prayerful poetry woven through Roger’s work—a gentle reverence in his tone and posture toward the heartbroken—and an ambition to use art, color and poetic language to communicate love and promote healing and hope in today’s hurting world.

Roger serves as the Director of Christian Formation and Parish Life at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston, TX and is a member of the National Association of Grieving Children and Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. He lives with his wife and daughter just outside of Houston.

Meet Emmanuel's Authors Coming June 6th
Emmanuel is blessed with many published authors and illustrators in our midst. We are delighted that four will join us on the day of our event.  Helen, Linda, Kat and Catriona are going to be on hand to welcome guests and host the Emmanuel author table.
Helen L. Williamson
Picture
Helen L. Williamson was born in Holywood, Northern Ireland. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. For many years she taught creative writing in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she lives with her husband. She is the author of Tales from Balladhoon, A Pineapple Dream and Other Nonsense, Higgledy-Piggledy Thoughts, I Just Met a Dinosaur, and Adventures in Dinglewood.

Linda Marchman
Picture
Linda Marchman has lived with 45 cats and 1 dog in her lifetime. She began rescuing homeless cats when she was in elementary school, trying to find appropriate homes for them. Strays and semi-feral cats have become beloved pets over the years. To date, Linda has written and self-published three books about cats:  Two novels (Gone Astray and Silent Meow) and a collection of true tales of happy reunions, (Lost and Found Cats.)   She and her husband live close to Crozet, Virginia, with a houseful of felines of all colors and ages. (Pictured: Linda and Peter, of the trio Peter, Paul, and Mary.)

Kat Connell
Picture
Kathryn Dodge Connell worked with her daughter Elizabeth Connell Lewis on publication of My Teacher's Garden.  In My Teacher's Garden, Ms. Hildegard is a special kind of teacher. Not only does she have a knack for gardening, she nurtures the children in her classroom in a similar way. Just as a gardener tends to different flowers, she gives every child what he or she most needs to blossom and grow. Elizabeth also authored Stick Boy: Peter is a dreamer, and with just the right stick, he imagines all sorts of exciting games and adventures. Sometimes his imagination gets him into trouble, however. While he is inventing new games, he often completely forgets the world around him.

Kat is a life-long gardener and artist. She waters her flowers in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Elizabeth Connell Lewis has been a teacher, writer and Gifted Education specialist for 25 years.

WELCOME
This is the table, not of the Church but of Jesus Christ. It is made ready for those who love God and who want to love God more.
So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, You who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time or ever before.
You who have tried to follow and all of us who have failed. These are the gifts of God for the People of God.
