Easter Reprise by Wendy Gayle

4/14/2020

 God
gave us
free will, not
to rule the world
but to love, cherish,
and share in creation.
It is through Christ, we cross the
borders of the holy and are
entreated to love one another.
Lord, take us, renew us and remake us.
We are Easter people and see the world
not as lost but full of new promise.
The road is not without peril,
many challenges await,
but in Christ we find strength.
We are one body.
Alleluia!
Together
we will
mend.
The first stanza is from Easter: A New Beginning posted last Easter.  The second stanza is new and as we remain in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, it reflects a prayer of hope for the renewal yet to come.

Check out Wendy Gayle's blog site Windows to the Spirit for more poetry and reflections.

Hosanna for Palm Sunday

4/6/2020

From Kathleen Capshaw: Growing up in the Moravian church... my favorite Sunday of the church year was always Palm Sunday because the congregation sang this hymn along with the choir... just as it is shared here in the video. Everyone can learn the words and little children can belt it out with joy.  Blessed is He that comes!

Sense of Place on March 29, 2020

3/30/2020

Picture
From Camilyn Leone: Thank you for those members and founders of EEC of Greenwood who came before me for creating a beautiful place.  They built a church that humbly sits atop a hill under a canopy of old oak trees.  The steeple reaches into the sky, but it is beneath the branches that lift my eyes in wonder of our God. This reminds me that all human endeavors should seek to honor God’s creation.  How blessed we are to have this place to come together as Christians sheltered by God’s love.

"Blessed Jesus, We Are Here" by J. S. Bach

Country Apple Galette

3/29/2020

Picture
From Janice Fischer: This is Jacques Pepin's very easy apple galette, one of my go-to desserts.  It's great for people like me who don't have a great hand with pastry crusts because it doesn't have to look fancy.  You can substitute any kind of fruit, add seasonings, nuts, use different sweeteners - endless possibilities.  It doesn't use a lot of fruit (2 apples or pears usually) and is a good way to use fruit that's getting old.  Dried works too!

Cooking With What You've Got

3/28/2020

Following in the footsteps of Ina Garten and Katie Couric.
Picture
From Kathleen Capshaw: I watched a segment on GMA where a chef at home with his kids was suggesting that you try to take whatever you have on hand to substitute.. and while he was going a little too far in my opinion (canned tuna on nachos)... it did remind me to innovate. And as well my instagram served me a delightful little video of Katie Couric doing phone a friend with Ina Garten. She was making the Broccoli and Bowties recipe FOUND HERE but asked Ina if she could use broccolini instead. I soon found myself looking at the large bowl of plain shells pasta we had cooked but had way too much leftover ... I had broccoli... so I went with it and used the already cooked pasta and added my own twist... some italian chicken sausage I sautéed in the pan after I tossed the garlic lemon butter mixture in. I even had a tiny amount of pine nuts burning a hole in my pantry.

A Comforting Side Dish

3/24/2020

Picture
From Cindy Kirchner: This yummy side dish always reminds me of my mom and dear Mrs. Nellie Anderson who gave my mom the recipe. Mrs. Anderson owned Anderson’s Store out in Avon. I have many memories of sitting on the couches at the back of the store and drinking a Crass Cherry soda while my mom and dad visited with Miss Nellie. Mrs. Anderson had the most beautiful white hair! When I was a kid, I didn’t like this recipe too much, but it smelled so good when it was cooking, I was soon eating bowl after bowl- had to be cut off, lol. Here’s what you need:
1 stick of butter
1 head of cabbage - chopped up
1 sweet onion - chopped up
1-1 1/2 cup of elbow macaroni, penne, bow tie, etc...
Let butter melt on medium heat while you chop up the cabbage and onion. Place these in the saucepan and cover, stirring frequently so it doesn’t stick. Salt and pepper to taste. Do NOT add water!
While the cabbage mixture cooks, cook the pasta. Drain and add the parts to the mixture. More salt and pepper!
I’ve seen other recipes that add kielbasa or other sausage. We’re having it tonight as a side for pork loin. Enjoy!

I Giorni

3/24/2020

From Linda Aagaard: Hi all! One of my favorite pieces of music, which is beautiful and ethereal, good for lifting the soul, is A Angel Dubeau and La Pieta, performing “ I Giorni”. Please check it out, you will love it. Hope everyone is hanging in there and doing well.

WELCOME
This is the table, not of the Church but of Jesus Christ. It is made ready for those who love God and who want to love God more.
So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, You who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time or ever before.
You who have tried to follow and all of us who have failed. These are the gifts of God for the People of God.
