A Soup Kitchen Feeding Ministry
Emmanuel Episcopal volunteers participate monthly in the The Disciples Kitchen (DK) program of Waynesboro, VA. The DK program is a non-denominational soup kitchen that is sponsored by over 30 churches and organizations and is open to all individuals and families in need of a free hot meal. From opening its doors in September 2007, DK has served over 25,000 meals. Lunches average from 60 to 80meals served each day and Saturday breakfast runs from 35 to 70meals served each time.
The goal of the program is to share what God has given us —His love and His blessings— by providing a hot, nutritious meal free-of-charge to anyone who needs it. This is in keeping with Matthew 25 where Jesus replied to the question, "When was it we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and you gave you something to drink? …Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me."
DK lunch is served on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm at the Second Presbyterian Church, 133 N. Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980. Breakfast is served Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 10:45 am at Basic United Methodist Church, 5th St & Delphine Ave, Waynesboro, VA 22980
Emmanuel Episcopal volunteers prepare meals and serve meals for the Kitchen 12 times a year. We serve our signature chili lunch on the 3rd Monday of even numbered months and we serve our egg and sausage casserole breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of odd numbered months. Emmanuel also contributes toiletries, cleaning supplies, and paper products to the Saturday Supply Closet at Basic United Methodist.
